Great Innovators Are Cost Savers, Too

The innovators whom we hold in high esteem like to push boundaries. Take Peter Jackson, the director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Jackson received well-deserved props for bringing Middle Earth to the big screen in such a spectacular way, and the three films combined raked in 17 Oscar nominations. But Jackson's innovation prowess reached far beyond his visual wizardry; he found innovative ways to cut his budget, too. For one, he shot all three movies at the same time. He also saved money by performing principal photography in New Zealand, and he did all the post-production work there as well. The total cost? $280 million. That seems like a lot, but when you factor in the scope and scale of the production — we're talking three epic movies here — he achieved a huge cost savings.
