CIOs Are Spread Too Thin

CIOs have a lot on their plate: big data, data security, internal business systems, the needs of customers. It's too much. When CIOs oversee infrastructure, integration, intelligence, and innovation, something is sure to receive less attention than it should, and innovation is what usually takes the hit. Of course, there are CIOs who possess the skills necessary to manage multiple roles, but they're rare. So, considering the work overload, organizations should try to align their CIO's responsibilities and their corporate strategy to get the most out of the position. A good place to start is to make sure that the CIO reports to the right person. In organizations ruled by cost leadership strategies, the CIO should report to the CFO. In companies focused on product differentiation, the CIO should report to the CEO.
