July 05, 2013 If You Want Work-Life Balance, Don't Join a Start-UpCompared to large corporations, start-ups seem to have the right idea when it comes to office culture. The perks, of course, are well known: ping-pong tables, beer, video games, etc. They seem like fun places to work. But when you take a closer look, you'll see that the work-life balance at a lot of start-ups is horrible. Since the goal is to scale the business quickly, working weeknights and weekends is considered a rite of passage. And when staff size increases — and this can happen very dramatically — management teams don't put enough thought into HR policies such as vacation and sick time. They're too focused on the product.
