July 24, 2013 Birth Rates Fall for U.S. Younger Women but Rise for Older Women The U.S. birth rate continues to decline overall, except in the case of women in their late thirties and early forties. The increase is most dramatic for women ages 40 to 44: In that group, the rate rose 1% from 2010 to 2011, hitting 10.3 births per 1,000 women, says Pew Research. (That's not a record: The rate for women in their early forties stood at 10.6 in 1967, when the country's overall birth rate was higher than it is today.) The birth rate dropped 8% from 2010 to 2011 among teenagers and 5% among women ages 20 to 24, hitting historic lows in both age groups.
