August 12, 2013 Preserve Your Company's Story at All CostsReplacing a charismatic leader can be a perilous task. This is especially true if the leader was the shepherd of the company's story. When faced with this dilemma, too many corporate boards fall into the same trap: they hire someone with the most impressive résumé, instead of someone who has the skills and wherewithal to preserve the company's story at all costs. This is a huge mistake. For example, when Ford Motor Company — from the 1990s into much of the 2000s — strayed from the innovation-minded, American-dream ideals of its namesake, the company suffered. Luckily, in recent years, the company is back on the map — due in no small part to its decision to turn down bailout money, a very old-school "American" thing to do. Most companies, of course, don't get a second chance. SOURCE: If Your Leader Departs, Preserve the Company's Story First by Ty Montague |
