Biases Can Be Fixed... With a Lot of Group Effort

We all hold deep-seated biases. They are tough to spot, and even tougher to change — especially when they seep into our institutions. So this begs the question. Can we do anything about it? Yes... but there's a catch. Being vigilant isn't enough; instead, we need to design processes that promote change. Take the recent uptick in female-penned op-ed pieces at major publications. This didn't happen out of nowhere. Thanks to efforts by the likes of The Op-Ed Project, a group that made editors aware of their selection bias and recruited and trained more women to write such essays, there's been a 40% increase in female bylines. So be an agent of change. Recognize that you have a bias, and figure out how to correct for it.
