Ridesharing Needs Government Support

Ridesharing is taking off thanks to services such as Lyft, Sidecar, and Zimride. But not everyone is happy about it. Taxi unions, no surprise, feel threatened. Police in some cities are issuing tickets to rideshare drivers. And some cities have banned the services altogether. This is unfortunate. Why? Commuters and municipalities will lose out on the potential benefits: less congestion on the road and less money spent on infrastructure. The convenience and cost savings alone should be enough reason for governments to get behind ridesharing.
