Dissatisfied Workers Have an Overly-Idealized View of Entrepreneurship

The media has a thing for entrepreneurs. Everywhere you look, there's a new story about a young person who just launched a successful start-up. The attention plays into every cube dweller's dream of branching out on his or her own. No rules. No boss. More freedom! But let's step back for a second: starting a business — and maintaining it — is extremely hard work. So why do we all have such a wide-eyed and misguided view of entrepreneurship? Blame it on our institutions. Since many of us don't feel like our companies recognize us for the work that we do, and don't reward us for our efforts, we've developed a rosy view of what it's like to be our own bosses.
