Take Money Off the Table During Performance Reviews

At the end of every year, our bosses sit down with us, assess our performance, and give us ratings that determine our raises and promotions. This system is used by just about every company. But it's a terrible way to do things because money discourages straight talk. When money isn't part of the discussion, managers are more likely to give in-depth feedback, and employees are more likely to speak their minds. And when more honest conversations take place, employees walk away more motivated to gain new skills and work on their weaknesses.
