December 20, 2013 New Leaders Should Listen First, Act SecondNew leaders tend to make the same mistake. They think their first priority is to come up with a game plan. They jump right into the mix. They try to establish their authority as soon as possible. But whether you're taking over a new business unit, leading a new team, or assuming the role of CEO, it's much more important to gain the trust of your followers. That may seem obvious, but many new leaders skip this step, even though it doesn't take much time or effort. They get so wrapped up in making decisions that they forget to ask their followers questions. They forget to gather information. They forget to listen.
